Most of the town occupies the flat ground above low cliffs rising from the shoreline. Since the BGS has been developing 3D models to capture and visualise the complexity of both the superficial and bedrock geology.
These models will enable planning authorities and regulators to address land-use issues associated with rapidly increasing urban development, particularly around Inverness. The North West Highlands Geopark contains geology and a landscape of world-class quality, significance and importance.
