Constable and Turner were the leading figures in English landscape painting of the 19th cent. Constable became famous for his landscapes of Suffolk, Hampstead, Salisbury, and Brighton. The son of a prosperous miller, he showed artistic talent while very young but did not devote himself to art until he when he went to London to study at.   If we look closely, archival documents can tell us so much more than that which is written in their pages. John Constable was an English painter best known for his paintings of the English countryside. Throughout his career, he sketched his native valley of River Stour extensively and the area later came to be known as the Constable County.
